Artist Profile: Isabelle Huang Ling

Isabelle Huang Ling (Chinese name: 黄龄) came highly recommended from various people on Baidu, who use the words ‘criminally underrated’ and ‘creative’ in a music industry that often prizes looks over actual performance skills. Her musical style is indeed very unique, and she possesses a plaintive yet rich voice somewhat reminiscent of older Chinese folk traditions. Her songs are a blend of pop, R&B, folk and ballads – quite versatile.

I admit, her songs take a while to get used to, due to Huang’s highly distinctive style, but I like them, so I thought I would share.

Her signature song, and the eponymous single on her first album Itchy/痒 (released in 2007):

Live guitar duet for 夜来香/Fragrance of Night:

Just a reminder: my providing the songs here are purely for sampling purposes, if you do like her music, please support the artist by purchasing the album at Yesasia. This goes double for artists that are not as famous, so please don’t ‘hit and run’!

Vienna Teng Giveaway

Okay, the download link is going to be offline after 24 hours, because I do love Vienna’s music ever so much and want her to sell lots of albums so she can continue to make awesomely good music. She has three albums out right now, Waking Hour, Warm Strangers and Dreaming Through the Noise.

Vienna can compose, write lyrics as well as sing, so you know, awesomeness quotient up there already – there is also the fact that she abandoned a career in computer science to pursue her love for music. (Plus I have respect for people who start a musical instrument at the age of five and keep going, dudes.) There’s not much more I can tell you that wikipedia can’t do better, so I will leave you here with some live performances of hers.

I love how varied her style is, I love the way she makes the instruments just as important as her voice (especially 1Br/1Ba – come on, have you ever heard of a violin having an orgasm before? I didn’t think so). I love how her songs are so livable, that they sound beautiful and don’t wear out with successive listening.

Gravity and Unwritten Letter #1, two favourites of mine, both from Waking Hour

Homecoming (Walter’s Song), this song always makes me want to cry, in a good way. From Warm Strangers

Blue Caravan, from Dreaming Through the Noise

Lullaby for a Stormy Night, from Waking Hour

Recessional, also from Dreaming Through the Noise

Judge the quality for yourselves,

Happy Birthday to Faye Wong

Friday, August 8, 2008 Leave a comment

Along with it being the Olympics Opening Ceremony day (which had just a tad too much spectacularity for me to stomach), it’s also my favourite songstress’s birthday!

So happy 39th to Faye! (And congratulations to her on her third pregnancy!)

Have some stuff on credit:

Eyes On Me – used in Final Fantasy and arguably her most famous song ever.

Red Bean – because I like it lots.

Wishing for Eternity – this one is basically Faye Wong crooning the words of a very famous poem. 😀

Bu Liu – I uploaded this for a friend. Lyrics here.

Hope you’re having a nice day, wherever you are, cheering on your Olympic team! 😀
