Merlin!

(From a special episode to raise money for charity. Cuteness! Left to right: Morgana, Guinevere, Merlin, Arthur, Uther and Gaius.)

OMG ANOTHER SHOW ABOUT ARTHURIAN LEGEND!!! (Was a total Arthurian Legend whore in high school, can you tell?)

Except, you know, not so much because Merlin is the same age as Arthur, looks like a skinnier, less chiseled version of Tom Welling and has magical powers that have to do with glowing eyes. He’s way too kind and has no sense of social structure, which leads to him mouthing off to Arthur and this does not lead to the best first impression ever, especially as Arthur is being a bully.

Arthur is a blond and bullying ‘royal ass’, according to Merlin himself. He’s also hunky and … a decent guy, if you peel off the layers of jock. Also, he goes through monsters, a sorceress and evil giant spiders to get Merlin a flower. (It’s to save the guy’s life, but still, most people wouldn’t do that for their servant, yunno?)

Morgan le Fay is not Arthur’s half-sister anymore, she is an Irish princess/lady under the guardianship of King Giles Uther Pendragon and smoking hot to boot. (Well she was always smoking hot to begin with, and we’re not entirely sure she’s not evil either.) And to avoid all confusion with the guys running around named Morgan, they’ve changed her name to Morgana, so you know, we don’t think she’s a guy or anything. (Those long flowing locks and that scrumptious figure could have fooled me.)

Guinevere is suddenly not fair-haired nor even a princess. Instead she is a maidservant of Morgana’s and keeps trying to get it on with Merlin, who’s all angsty that he’s stuck serving Arthur (which mainly seems to involve helping Arthur put his clothes on, and no, brain, you are not allowed to go there, noooooo!) Somewhere, poor King Leodegrance is sobbing.

King Uther is a total nut when it comes to magic (see: trauma to do with his dead wife, Ygraine, only in this version, agggh the canon is being killed) and chops heads like I eat chocolate. Which is to say, extensively. So there’s this whole, Merlin keep your magic secret no Merlin do not levitate the what are you doing MERLIN STOP!!! (Mainly it is the audience saying this, because the show has still not gotten the hang of longer episode arcs and has a pattern of Evil Magical Thing of the Week. Who all want to kill Arthur. Who in turn needs to be saved by Merlin. With magic.)

Poor Gaius is Merlin’s mentor, and seems to be getting a lot of exercise via brow-raising. He’s the court physician and the king’s best friend, though their friendship is always tested by Uther’s bull-headedness about magic. He’s the wise old man of the show, you could say.

There is also a dragon who’s trying to get Merlin and Arthur to admit that they’re really soulmates. No, really. He says things like, “Merlin, it is your destiny to be with Arthur”, and “The half cannot truly hate that which makes it whole”. We call him the Shipper Dragon or the Slash Dragon. Also, judging from the cave he lives in, Camelot might just be built on a giant abyss. Which is known for its great foundational qualities, yeah.

I think there’s a plot in there somewhere, let me check.

Despite my puritan streak when it comes to source material, this show is so great for the lulz. Also, Arthur and Merlin are destined to be together forever!!

[ETA: This Nano thing, it is not getting done. Dammit.]

Oh I had no idea you watched this kind of show! (I am watching it every Sunday, it makes my day happier everytime).
If you like bbc’s historial shows, you might just love their Robin Hood series with Jonas Armstrong. Or Amstrong. Whatever his name is.

On the issue with Morgana/Guenievre, wasn’t Merlin supposed to be paired with her, and Guinevere with Arthur? I’m not sure they will stick to the arthurian legends, since they already introduced us to Mordred, but who knows.

It airs on Saturday for us, the broadcasting times are a bit odd, I admit.

But ep10! The big reveal! What will Arthur do??

Well, to be honest Merlin isn’t showing much interest in Guinevere, and I think he thinks Morgana is gorgeous but isn’t going there. (And Morgana definitely has more romantic chemistry with Merlin, since she and Arthur really do seem like brother and sister.) So Merlin/Arthur it is. Besides, the dragon totally ships them. 😛

I don’t usually watch this type of thing (Dr. Who is fantastic but once you fall behind it’s hell to catch up.) But SRB went all *squeeflail* so I decided to check it out. And then I ended up hooking a few friends on, so there’s no way they’re letting me not watch this (apparently I have a responsibility, as the one who spread the show…)

As for the original legend… the less you try to link the two, the better, because atm it’s really messy. I mean, the names are all there, but everything’s scrambled and um… I don’t know where they’re going, except that Mordred will come back and kill Arthur. (Plus they seem to think 4th century England = Renaissance Prague/Palazzo Sforza.)

I feel an analysis post coming on. Gaby, I totally blame you.

Oh it does air on saturday. I just have to wait to the next morning to download it.
I think Arthur, given how many time Merlin saved his royal ass, will be cool with it. He’ll feel betrayed at first, but then he’ll forgive him and won’t tell Uther, because Merlin without Merlin is weird.
Merlin/Arthur? Seriously? Even I am not going there, lol.

You have talent for spreading shows around. I just hope it won’t be the spanish flu next time.

For the architectural thing, I really didn’t notice there was something wrong with me. It reminded me of Robin Hood so I assumed it was contemporain a l’époque (couldn’t finish the sentence in english, lack of vocab 😦 ).

I’m sure you have a million things to do, so just procrastinate that analysis post and do more important stuff… like the nanowrimo for example. 😀

I will give it a few tries this weekend, thanks guys. 😀

FC: I know Arthur will get over it, but I just want to see his pretty head angst for a bit. (Evil, I know.) Besides, Merlin’s so obvious with his magic it kind of kills me with irony that no one’s noticed yet. I mean, how on earth could he have spotted the snakes without magic? Also, since this is projected to have five seasons, I really don’t look forward to the angst of Morgana going evil, etc etc. Agh.

Nah, the Camelot shots from the square makes it look like an Italian Palazzo (esp the fountains and statues) and the far away ones with the entire castle makes it look like medieval Prague. It’s prettier that way though. I mean, I wouldn’t want to watch people actually live the life of 5th century, because it’s … disgusting?

(As for the Merlin/Arthur, um, I don’t know. ‘Two sides of the same coin’, ‘destined to be together’ and ‘the half cannot truly hate that which makes it whole’ kind of don’t help. Also, when they met, it was totally a boy meets prince, boy not impressed with prince, prince spends rest of show trying to prove that he is worthy of boy’s respect. Which is so easy to interpret as young love… and I’ll shut up now.)

No doubt Morgana is going to go ballistic on Uther someday, but I don’t think she’ll do that on Arthur or Merlin. 5 seasons? That’s awesome!

When I went to England in like Mars or April, we visited a museum in Canterbury, it was about the canterbury tales, and they were those wax human scale people from back then. They were amazingly dirty and scary, so I asked why, and the tour guide said they wanted to show how it really was. She said that at that time we couldn’t have survived in the streets more than two days because of how much it stank (stunk?)… o_O
I’ve got a few pictures on facebook if you want to take a quick look (and kind of visit england, lol)

You make that Merlin/Arthur ship feel right. BUT I WILL NOT AGREE, EVER. MERLIN WILL GO WITH MORGANA AND ARTHUR WITH GUENIEVRE. I WANT THAT VERY MUCH!
I hope my comment doesn’t go to the spam thing because of the capslock…

    Love,

For those who don’t live in the UK and would like to watch this online, all the episodes can be found on http://merlin-streaming.blogspot.com/. At this point, you can also find episodes 1-7 on YouTube (just google “Merlin ep [insert number]).

Just beware that the videos on the first website are mostly uploaded onto Megavideo, so there are certain viewing limits per every few hours or so. Other than that, it’s a great source. 😀

I love the show, and it gets completeley epic in later seasons. I don’t know much about Arthurian legend except the sword and merlin, but after looking it up, it makes me wonder how they’ll pull off that “Morgana slept with Arthur and he killd himself” thing. Since it’s a kid show, they might not put that in there. Merlin, in my opinion, is better than Legend of the Seeker (which I am an avid fan of). To me, Merlin pulled off Arthurian legend better than that Starz show “adult” Camelot (which got compared to Merlin and was later cancelled by Starz).
