Iljimae Episode 20, recap

Darlings! He’s not dead! 🙂

I know it’s confusing, but I’ll give you my take on it… but first I’d like to thank everyone who’s been diligently following the recaps and the drama, there are too many of you to name, but do know that I appreciate your feedback, encouragement and capslocked comments. 😀

And sorry if this wasn’t as early as usual, there was a slight delay in csub release… and torrenting sucked more than usual…

I think an appropriate song for this episode would be Homecoming, by Vienna Teng. Especially that one phrase, when she says, ‘We all have our own endings, and we all have our own scars…” Anyway, on with the recap.

Episode 20, finale

The king comes back – as he remembers Yong as the one who came to voice the people’s complaints. The king comments that the look in his eyes is memorable, but wonders why he is here. Yong makes something up about building up a Korea that takes care of its people, and that he’s a guard because he wanted to contribute. He also adds that there weren’t enough people to help out at the banquet, so the extra guards are doing what they can. He tells the king his ‘real’ name (he made something up) and gets away with it.

The mafia dude and the hunter’s son tell him to do his stuff. They can take care of moving the stuff out.

Shi Hoo stares at the men to be shipped off and knows that Iljimae will come here for sure, however, he is called away. The guards for the men are tricked away by Yong in a palace soldier costume and the captured men make a successful escape. Shi Hoo runs back but is too late.

Iljimae continues searching through the different palace buildings while the captives dig at a particular spot in the palace. Escape tunnels ftw. Lol. The men’s directions come from Daeshi’s favourite wooden mask, which has instructions from Iljimae written on the inner side.

Shi Hoo studies maps of the palace and discovers a lotus pond in one of the older versions – he’s certain that Iljimae is using this as an escape tunnel starting place. We also have shots of Yong expositing to his men in the lair about the different locations to dig from. Shi Hoo gets smart and tells Shi Wan and his people to wait in a certain area, as there will be diggers there. Yup, the diggers are the gangsters from some time ago.

Shi Wan orders three of his men to guard the diggers while the rest follow him down into the tunnel. Meanwhile, Daeshi is urging his fellow captives on, deep in the tunnel. Shi Hoo follows the tunnel from inside, and realizes that Iljimae had people digging at different spots.

Outside, the three remaining guards are tossed into the tunnel by Shim Deok, the shoemaker’s dad and Eun Chae’s servant’s dad. The captives come out of another one entirely. There is a joyful reunion.

Shi Wan and co. are stuck walking inside a sewage tunnel while Shi Hoo gets the right tunnel, but again a step too late to be of any use.

Ahaha. Iljimae leads the hunter’s son, the shoemaker and mafia dude into the royal treasury, where they take charge of stuffing all the valuables into sacks for transport. The hunter’s son goes for the big stuff while the other two just stick jewelry into any available sack. (The shoemaker’s still in his palace uniform, huh.) Anyway, Iljimae sets a timed bunch of what looks like dynamite in the treasure house, so that they explode right when the gala banquet starts.

Of course they can’t carry around sacks of treasure, even as palace personnel there are limits, but they tie the bags to lotus lanterns that float on the surface so it can be retrieved later via the bridge we saw last episode.

The shoemaker goes back to work while the two outsiders work on getting back out of the palace.

We get a shot of the outside of the palace – many anxious people awaiting Iljimae’s appearance, as well as those intimately connected with Yong, like his birth mother and Dani. The two mothers are super worried. Dani, in particular, looks like she’s about to have a heart attack any time soon.

Inside, a furious (and foul-smelling) Shi Wan stomps around. He sees mafia dude and the hunter’s son, still in their palace uniforms, taking a cart somewhere. He inspects it, but there’s nothing but old burlap bags on the cart. He lets them go.

Meanwhile, the king reflects on the young man he met. Then a frantic noble shows up (it’s the one who blackmailed him earlier, what a shrill voice, and not only shrill, but also constipated) all flustered about the missing conscripts. The king reassures him that he has the situation in hand, only to be forced to stamp an agreement to let the Ming revivalists use Korea as a military base. (Hm. I wonder who has military bases in Korea now.)

King’s not happy, and he’s probably going to do something about it. In the meantime, he can party! But the banquet is not at all festive, and even the music and dancing sound pretty flat.

On Jeju island, Eun Chae is enjoying playtime with little kids while her father fumes at not being able to fish anything. Byun Shik grumbles about being still here, and looks over at his daughter – he is resigned to her forever helping the poor, but that doesn’t mean he’s happy about it. A servant brings news of Iljimae’s latest doings, and Byun Shik gleefully cheers him on as a sort of petty vengeance against the king for demoting him. However, he forbids all mentions of Iljimae in front of Eun Chae.

The bombs set inside the palace explode, creating mass panic. The king is shepherded to a safe spot after his tents collapse while the constipated voice noble gets his paper stolen. I love the scene when a giant white sheet unrolls to show the trademark sprig of red plum blossoms in front of the main palace.

Take that, king.

Mafia dude and the hunter’s son take advantage of the ensuing chaos to get their goods out of the palace. However, Shi Wan recognizes the mafia dude (also cowardly and does not want to face the potential of confronting Iljimae while guarding the king, I bet) and stops them. Fortunately, mafia dude’s underlings come dressed up as soldiers and fool Shi Wan into letting them run towards more guards. When these guards actually escort the mafia dude out, Shi Wan gives chase, only to be held back at the palace gate by lit coal-lobbing peasants.

Night has fallen, and the king puzzles out what Iljimae’s actually searching for (he’s hit all the symbol marked palace buildings save one and is working on it as they speak)…

Kyumi’s mother notices Dani asking after Yong frantically, but goes back to holding her anxious vigil – not sure if she knows who her son is, but surely even she knows that he couldn’t have been a Manchurian envoy.

Shi Hoo does recon at the bombed palace building and notices a bell engraved with a tattoo of one of the dead men. He starts to suspect something.

Meanwhile, Iljimae is having trouble with the lock to the last palace. It requires four keys, but he only has three (the last key is in the king’s hands, and it’s also the only copy). The last building has important files from the time of the rebellion and something else too… anyway, the king sends his soldiers there to guard against Iljimae entering.

Aww, while Yong is panicking at not being able to pick the lock, Swe Dol’s spirit appears and tells him to cool down and open the lock. He does so just in time to avoid the assassin dude.

Meanwhile, constipated noble demands to see the king but is taken to the assassin. He isn’t allowed to see the king and gets angry, insulting the assassin that he was just a peasant when the king took him in (thus he serves the king so loyally?) he also shouts that the assassin better not think he is the king just because he gets preferential treatment. Anyway, the noble gets super fussy and annoyed and decides to hand over the document incriminating the king in Lee Won Ho’s death to the chief investigator of the state.

The assassin gets up and kills him from behind. Shi Hoo witnesses this, as well as where he stored the incriminating document.

Iljimae gets to the chamber of secrets (har har, sorry) and notices an infrared-like criss-cross of fine threads across the floors. He gets his nifty crossbow out and decides to climb through the chamber on a rope. This works really well until Iljimae notices a really large painting of the king. He stops.

Cut to Shi Hoo sneaking in and reading the document – really just words written in blood, on a paper. He reads it and finds out the truth of the matter – that the king had Lee Won Ho killed and then framed as a traitor. He remembers the noble father and son duo who saved him when he was a child. (Yay for worldview shifts!)

At the same time, his half brother stares at the overlarge portrait of the king in shock as he sees the symbol of his father’s killer on the king’s sword. Yong realizes that his target is the teddybear king. (Still probably doesn’t realize he’s royal blood, but okay.) He’s immobilized by shock for a moment.

Shi Hoo, done with the document, picks up something else that looks familiar, and it’s the evidence he planted so many years ago – and he fully realizes his own role in his father’s death.

I like the rather obvious juxtaposition as both brothers finally get to the same point in their investigations. 😀

The king is still wondering why Iljimae’s gone after the areas he has, and he finally realizes that Yong’s gaze is the same as Lee Won Ho’s, especially when they talk about the people of Korea. He gives an order for them to capture Lee Kyum, and staggers around being crazy.

People shoot arrows at the rapidly advancing Iljimae, but the roof is awfully far and he’s unharmed. Shi Hoo comes out to the courtyard and sees the king fleeing somewhere. Iljimae comes off from the roof to get to where he thinks the king is, kicking aside all opposition, but the king’s already fled to his underground bunker.

He comes out, only to be confronted with a bazillion more guards. Shi Hoo comes upon the scene, and takes a moment to rip his clothes (minds out of gutter, thank you) to write a message with his own blood for Kyum. Then he jumps into the fray, pretending to be fighting Iljimae, but only passing on a message. (Who the heck is in charge of choreographing the fight? It looks like drunken gymnastics.) Yong knows he can’t kill Shi Hoo, but they’re about the same level of skill, and getting tangled here would be bad.

But! Shi Hoo gets Iljimae tangled somewhere far away (relatively speaking) from the other soldiers and tells him that he is also Lee Won Ho’s son. (Yay!) He hands Yong the message then leaps back to fight the oncoming soldiers. And unlike Kyum, he’s totally okay with killing the opponent.

The slip of fabric tells him that the king is in the vault Iljimae broke into last. He goes to search, but drops his father’s lockpick on the network of strings tied to bells. Four soldiers come out and fight him, but he dispatches them in a few seconds. Lucky for him, both assassins have been called away to meet Kunghe.

The assassin dude is like, I was going to kill you anyway, but thanks for coming here on your own. The unarmed Kunghe has only one request – and that is for them to spare Iljimae, but instead the assassin brings the king into the conversation, and mentions betrayal etc. Kunghe says:

Betray our heaven? Do you still think of him as your heaven? That serving him would be to serve the great purpose of your life? Remember for what purpose we first followed him? Gwanghaegun, who killed his own mother and brothers to get the throne, was not fit for it. But he has killed his own brother and good friends, and even his own son, to preserve his seat on the throne.

The assassin replies:

To admit that he has made those mistakes, that would make me, who served him all my life, be only a killing demon. So I must believe that he is still the sky, and that serving him is to serve a great purpose. I will use all my forces to protect the king.

He leave, with an order to the second assassin to kill Kunghe. Kunghe is a much better fighter, of course, and wrenches his weapon out of his hands – and he also doesn’t kill his opponent.

We switch shots to see Bong Soon walking into the lair on crutches (see, she was alive). She is, I think, wearing a wig, because even allowing for summer weather, there is no way her hair is that messy and big naturally. Anyway, she reaches out to touch Iljimae’s armour (this must be the night before, as Iljimae is wearing his armour right now). She talks to the armour, asking Yong to come back safely and take her away somewhere.

Flashback to Yong looking up from a map of the palace, alone, as he notices the armour. He clutches a sleeve gratefully and murmurs to himself that Bong Soon is alive.

In the underground place, the king has gone more than little bit crazy from fear. He turns around to see Iljimae enter.

King: Who are you, that you dare to enter even this place? The ignorant call you a king and you believe them?

He draws out his sword and waves it at him. Honestly, it would have been better for him to not have done that, because that just makes Iljimae angry, seeing the symbol on the sword and confirming that he is indeed his father’s murderer. (And I love LJK as much as the next fan, but the Darth Vadar voice of doom has to stop. The heavy breathing too.)

Iljimae: Why did you kill my father? Why?
King: I should have killed you too. The sun in the sky wasn’t Won Ho, it was you. Because of you, my innocent little brother was killed.
Iljimae: Little brother? What little brother? Then… Why did you kill him? Why did you kill my father?
King: To keep my throne, I am willing to do worse than that.
Iljimae: So you were willing to kill your son, and countless innocents?!
King: Be it a little brother or a son, as soon as they threaten my throne, I will kill them. And that includes you!

The king lifts the sword and intends to chop Iljimae, but um, really bad fighting skills.

Iljimae: What kind of king are you? People don’t need a king like you. Prepare to die!

(It sounds corny, but is much better delivered onscreen.)

Anyway, we switch scenes to Kunghe fighting with assassin 2. Kunghe beats him, but doesn’t not kill him, instead pushing his spear into the ground (and this sort of marks another parallel scene in the episode, where teacher and student are both struggling with some issues).

Iljimae holds the king hostage with his own sword and goes out, intending to take him to the plum tree and make him apologize to his father’s spirit. No one dares to hurt him, as he is holding the king. Then, Mr. Assassin comes out of the crowd.

Outside, the anxious people are narrating his every move. One person predicts that he will die, surrounded as he is by imperial soldiers. On hearing this, Dani cries out for Yong. Kyum’s mother decides to approach her but faints before she can. Dani cradles the semi-conscious woman and hears her murmur “Kyumi” under her breath. She understands who this is.

As Iljimae stands thronged by swords, Shi Hoo leaps out of nowhere and comes to his exposed side. He looks his brother in the eye and they acknowledge each other. The assassin looks shocked. Kunghe leaps out of nowhere, on his other side, and tells him to finish what he began. The assassin looks astounded.

Then he gives the order for them to attack.

Kunghe and Shi Hoo take care of the imperial soldiers while Yong drags the king away. Shi Hoo is awesome, and Kunghe takes down everyone with a branch. The assassin takes a moment to slip past the two and follow Iljimae.

Iljimae shoves the king in a kneeling (hands and knees) position at the base of the plum tree. The king apologizes to his brother’s spirit, and agrees to overturn the charges of treason against Lee Won Ho and his family. Iljimae also tells him to apologize to the innocent peasants he killed, but I think the king’s reason’s gone already, as he’s mumbling to himself.

Iljimae: I have two fathers. One who taught me the meaning of right, and one who only stupidly cherished me, and sacrificed himself. But what kind of father are you? To your own son, and to your own people?! You don’t deserve any priviledges. Give up your throne right now!

The king is silent on this.

Iljimae: Swear that you will!
King: Alright, I will.
Iljimae: If you do not keep your oath, I will come and steal from you again.
King: But why won’t you just kill me?
(Uh, don’t tempt him, you … you thing.)

He plunges the sword into the ground and tells the king to go. As if he doesn’t believe it himself, the king gets up and staggers away slowly, murmuring ‘Won Ho’ periodically. (I’d say this was a symptom of being clinically insane, but I’m not qualified to say that yet.)

Ginkgo Hillside plays

Kyum falls to the ground, and says to his father: I couldn’t do it, I couldn’t kill him in the end. I did the right thing, father, right?

The assassin comes from behind and attacks him for humiliating his ‘heaven’. A very exciting fighting scene follows, in which the assassin wrenches Iljimae’s sword from him, but Iljimae returns the favour. He holds the sword to the assassin’s neck, but throws it away at the last second. (My god, didn’t you learn from the first time you did that?)

The assassin picks up Iljimae’s sword lying on the ground and slashes him in the back. He falls. The assassin looks at Iljimae lying on the ground, almost not believing it, and we switch scenes to idyllic Jeju.

Flower’s Message plays

Eun Chae stares off into the ocean, wearing a plain hanbok. Bong Soon looks at the lantern Yong made for her, still in the night before all this. (Chronology’s a bit messed up.)

We switch scenes again, to the assassin walking along the walls of Lee Won Ho’s house, when a blood-covered Shi Hoo comes up suddenly and slits his throat.

Shi Hoo: You taught me to kill the person standing in my path, be he a buddha or a friend. I am also Lee Won Ho’s son.

(Fangirls can swoon now.)

Kyum lies on the ground of the plum orchard, hallucinating and remembering his two fathers. His eyes stay open as the plum petals fall on him. Fade out.

4 years later.

At a bookseller’s, which barely covers its porn distribution (Lol, titles include The King and the Woman, and Love Between Dog and Wolf. A reference? Methinks so.) is a small child, much like Yong in appearance and action. The stallowner tries to chase him away.

The kid is five years old, tall because he’s like his mother, and he’s missing a tooth because he’s like his dad. (Um, I get the cute value, but genetics doesn’t work that way.) Lol, he gets chased off.

He bumps into Bong Soon, dressed as a disheveled boy, running away, and she asks him who he is.

“I’m Namyon’s beloved baby boy! … Ketong.” (Ketong means dog poo, and was the name Swe Dol had initially wanted to give Yong.) Anyway, he goes on to say that his dad thought it was cool, and blames him for ruining his image in the eyes of everyone who hears his real name. Then he runs to his mommy.

She turns around to see Dani and Kyum’s mother, who must have raised him together. Anyway, there’s an awkward hello and goodbye scene, with both sides assuring the other that everyone’s well.

Switch to Eun Chae looking at her guest house nostalgically, having been in Jeju these past four years… or not? Her servant runs up and blames her for not sending any news this past four years. She is married to mafia dude and their baby daugher is named after Kyum’s sister, Yeon. Eun Chae compliments them on the baby, but her servant grumbles that it’s the name of his first love, but he won’t say who… 😀

Eun Chae asks after ‘that child’ and they both look super awkward. They reassure her that he’s doing well and usher her in. She remembers Shi Hoo, and he’s doing well too.

In fact, the guy has gone off and started a martial arts school. I love that he’s training girls alongside the boys. LOVE. The only remaining assassin urges him to go back to working in the palace, as no one saw what happened that day (given, anyone who saw is probably dead by Shi Hoo’s hand). Shi Hoo demurs, as he wants to stay here and teach the children. He likes it better, and he also won’t give up the proof that Lee Won Ho was innocent. To him, doing this will allow him to protect the people his younger brother wanted to protect.

Eun Chae is back at the tree, looking at the blossoms. As she turns to leave, she hears the warbler singing. She remembers both little Kyum telling her the story and Yong telling her that even if ‘that child’ was dead, he would be happy.

Ketong, meanwhile, is watching Daeshi’s performance troupe. A mysterious dude in black leaps around on the rope (dude, harking back to King and the Clown days?) Daeshi and his father narrate, with Daeshi saying the famous words, “There’s nothing in this world I can’t steal, because I’m Iljimae!”

A bystander comes and tells them that the night before, some important official’s home was robbed, and in the exact style Iljimae used four years ago. Daeshi and Shim Deok look silent, while Eun Chae’s servant’s father protests that it’s all different. When the bystander scoffs, they bring up the matter that he was deported to China or dead – one rumour per person. (LOL. So he’s not dead, see? They’re trying to cover it up so they don’t start off a giant manhunt again.)

Ketong comes in the middle of their little crowd and mixes everything up like his father did with the previous set of rumours, but he confuses it too, grumbling about never having this memorized properly, and ruffling his hair, goes off. The adults look tense.

Mr. Shoemaker has gone back to his trade amongst the commoners, and is delivering shoes to a far distant shore, where Kunghe is living. Kunghe is annoyed that he’s so late, but the shoemaker only adds that telling him to deliver the shoes to someplace so far is considered harassment. He also delivers a threat from Shim Deok that if he stays out here and calls that prostitute out one more time, she will move her alehouse to the island to keep an eye on him.

Inside the package, there are two pairs of shoes. Kunghe picks them up (and litters) and shouts out for ‘that girl’. (Note: The translations say ‘that girl’, but many people who understand Korean have said that it’s more accurately interpreted ‘that rascal’, especially in light of what the PD has revealed about the ending. Also, ‘that rascal’ is a habitual nickname for Yong that Kunghe uses in the earlier episodes.)

The shoemaker’s father is making a living telling stories. Ketong appears, and annoys the old man by stealing his story away from him. He tells the true story of Iljimae’s return – from the mouth of babes shall you hear the truth and all that – and the king’s completely bonkers, by the way. The imperial guard think Iljimae is dead, but then he appears and the show picks up from episode one.

The king’s afraid, because he didn’t keep his promise, and now Iljimae’s come to steal from him.

Once the job’s done, he returns to his plum tree and awaits. He turns his head as the plum flower petals fall…

End episode.

Commentary/Rambling:

– It has been great fun writing this post, but I realized that I have so much to say I think I’d better defer my comments to another post altogether. And besides, this post is already 4200 words long. I think I’ll spare your eyes for a while longer. Shoo! Go outside! Enjoy the fresh air! Go swimming!

– Feel free to leave questions and comments! I’ll get back to you as soon as I’m rested and up! 😀

Thanks for the recaps. Now I can rewatch episode 20 again with understanding.
I knew Iljimae is not dead because the show ended by the plum tree which bring
back to episode one when he was touching the plum tree and flashes to the past.

ok I’ll go out and smell the roses. Thanks again.

Thanks so much for the recap. Holy cow, thank goodness. I didn’t get this part:

“…and he also won’t give up the proof that Lee Won Ho was innocent. To him, doing this will allow him to protect the people his younger brother wanted to protect.”

Was assassin #2 asking him to give up the proof? Also, who are the people that Yongee wants to protect by not releasing the evidence? I thought Yongee wanted the king to clear his father’s name, i.e. release the proof to everyone.

Anyways, thanks a lot for taking up this project and translating all the episodes and adding that exact bit of flair to make each so much fun to read. And a huge thanks for getting each done so quickly, which saved all of us the sheer AGONY of having to wait. 😉

Thank you for your entertaining and speedy recaps, which really helped me to keep up with the show. When I read the final episode was “blood spitting” worthy, I thought the main characters have probably dropped like flies. Still have yet to watch 19 and 20, but from your epi. 20 recaps, the end doesn’t sound too bad. It definitely sounds like an open ending with Iljimae kind of reflecting on the past and maybe thinking about his future. Only Iljimae the sequel (very slim chance of that happening) can explain what happens next.

Looking forward to your Legend of the Condor Heroes recaps! Where do you go to watch those episodes?

So he is not dead yet, it make sense if he isn’t living with his moms anymore cause there are so many people who knows his identity, but i am confuse does eun cha knows the real identity of iljimae??? does she knows he is the good-for-nothing yong-ee??????

Thanks for translation! I really admire you for sense of humor.
For better understanding the end of the drama I advise to all Iljimae’s funs to watch the beginning of the Episode #1.
And also here in the text above: “Kunghe picks them up (and litters) and shouts out for ‘that girl’. (Note: The translations say ‘that girl’, but many people who understand Korean have said that it’s more accurately interpreted ‘that rascal’”……
Yes, ‘that girl’ is wrong translation indeed. Kunghe shouted out: ” Damn, where has that rascal run away again?!!”……..Therefore the second pare of shoes is for….Yongeee! I’ve truely fallen in love with this drama.

Jk is interviewed recently and asks whether Iljimae will choose Eunchae or Bong Soon. He says that if he is Iljimae, he will rather choose Bong Soon as she sacrifices her life for him. It should be a hint from him that eventually Iljimae would take Bong Soon with him.

ketong is definitely not iljimae’s kid seeing that he is five and that time lapse had only been four years. i think it is probably some kid that the two mums picked off the street and decided to bring up. such a pity that iljimae would choose bs over ec, giving up his true love for the sacrifice bs had made.

If Ketong is 5, and time lapse is 4, it would mean he was 1 when that last big fight at the palace took place right? But we didn’t see Danee give birth. Ok, who fathered this child?! 🙂

yay i really enjoyed reading your recaps because i interpreted the ending as happy myself.

oh and to koopa, ketong is swe dol and dani’s child because koreans use a traditional way to count age where they count the days in the womb as a year of life, so a newborn starts at age 1, and get older on each passing new year..

Poor Bong Soon. (;_;) She sacrificed so much for Yong, he doesn’t deserve her!
(it’s -.- sometimes how ppl always seem to be revived from the dead in k-dramas… not in a bad way but you-knw-what-i-mean) And yea if she had died, it’ll make Iljimae guilty for life! Darn, looking at things, in his quest for revenge, he got a lot of people killed; could we say he’s selfish? ): But I hate the corrupt and high and mighty officials.

The king is realllly evil. But he seemed like he was feigning madness. Or has his bad deeds finally gotten to him? BTW I don’t rly get it. I mean if Lee Won Ho was his younger brother, doesn’t it make him the crown prince? Why would he threaten his throne?

Oh and does Eun Chae know who Iljimae truly is, besides him being her first and last love (ah!@.@) ? Cause before she went to Jeju, she kinda, paused, and turned back, as if expecting something?

I would have liked a Eun Chae-Iljimae ending though. ^__________^

So is the ending Bong Soon-Iljimae or Eun Chae-Iljimae?
    Eun Chae – Iljimae
    —————
    – He loves her but mentioned earlier to Bong Soon that he wants to forget his first love, when he asked Bong Soon to go away with him.
    – Eventhough she pleaded with him to let her see his face just once, he stopped her. Is it a sign that he knows they can’t be together because of her dad’s involvement in his family’s tragic deaths? To me, that scene showed Iljimae’s determination in cutting ties.

    Bong Soon – Iljimae
    —————-
    – They started out constantly fighting where he sees her a liar and thief. But gradually became friends. Isn’t that how some of the love story in K-dramas get started?
    – He had broken his promise to take her away in order to save Eun Chae. But that is it, he had no plans to be with Eun Chae.
    – Seeing someone sacrificing their life for you, is, to me, an incredibly sweet declaration of love, that’s hard for anyone to resist, especially when they have some feeling for each other. I say that because Yongee asked Bong Soon to go away with him, not as a sister, but more as a future lover, because why else would he ask her to wait till he forgets the current person in his heart? So, given the second chance with Bong Soon, I think he will keep his promise to her.
    – One last clue are the two pairs of shoes that Kunghe ordered. I saw in Seu Dong Yo that putting a man’s and a woman’s shoes together symbolizes that they are a couple. I could be completely off here. Put it to wishful thinking then, maybe the shoes he ordered are for Yongee and Bong Soon, with him acting as the parent from one side. I thought of this because I can’t see why he would order those in the first place… 😉

I blame the writers completely for leaving this show without a proper closure, and us confused and constantly looking for clues… 🙂

i was just reading an article where the director had clarified some things about the finale…

“Some viewers may have noticed that the sword used by the king’s guard is actually Iljimae’s edgeless sword. Iljimae did not collapse because of that slash but rather because of the blow. Apart from this, the last scene where Kong He (Iljimae’s master) had purchased two pairs of shoes is another clue. One pair is actually for Iljimae”

so im thinking that since kong he was his master he feels that he needs to find him and look out for him so he bought a pair of shoes for himself and one for yong

Hi..i`m still a little bit confuse, why did you say Lee Won Ho is the king`s little brother? I thought it was Gwanhae. From which eps that it show? And i`m agree with you too, I think Yong is alive and live with Kung He, but he didn`t tell Bongsoon and Eunchae, so they both think he was dead. I guess that from the sad expression that Bongsoon gave when she see “little Yong” a.k.a Ge Dong.

About the shoes I first thought they were Kung He and Yong`s shoes but Koopa bring different thought that could be true, if it is then maybe the shoes is reserved for Bongsoon one day if she finally able truly forgive Kung He and Yong decide to tell her the truth about his being alive.

It’s been quite clear from almost the beginning that Lee Won Ho was the younger brother of the king (ep1 he called him ‘big brother’, and ep20, while Iljimae was interrogating the king, he also said something like, for you I killed my younger brother). There are more clues but these are the most obvious ones.

Historically, the king probably did kill Gwanghaegun, but in the drama, we don’t really hear that mentioned.

    • Thursday, February 11, 2016 at 8:44 pm

in history gwanhaegun is king injo ‘s uncle not his younger brother , and gwanhaegun died years after he was removed from the throne and he was never kiled by king injo ^^ FOR MORE INFORMATIONS I RECOMMEN THIS DRAMA* HWAJUNG ¨¨* TO U 🙂

1)danee and yong’s real mom living together, yet he’s not reunited with them??? wut was he doing all 4 years?
2)Does Bong Soon actually roam around limpin’ by herself?
-cuz thatz cold if iljimae din’t keep his promise to PROTECT her, I’m the Bong soon-iljimae fan
3)Will we ever know who those shoes are for?

Everything is up in the air – as ambiguous endings seem to be ‘cool’ in the drama world. Eh. I can’t help you here, as I have the same problems!

As for Shi Hoo, he planted evidence that directly led to Lee Won Ho’s death not being investigated. If he didn’t plant the sheet of paper, the king would have had to assign a team of investigators to find who had killed the king’s younger brother, and some bright spark would have figured it out, sooner or later.

Sevenses.. thank you for your recap. Its make my day. Being Lee Joon Ki’s fan, and after waited so long for his acting in period drama, I recently purchased Iljimae’s DVD. But watching it from begining till the end, I was not enjoying it to the fullest. I practically struggling and trying very hard to remember each of the characters’s name and to understand the story lines. The English translations was badly done. Not only names was wrongly spelt, but it was always changing in spelling. I think whoever wrote those translations does not understand English at all. Simply types. Even the gender was referred wrongly. I barely able to comprehend each episode. I just assuming things most of the time. To make matter worse, the ending (episode 20) has no English subtitles at all, only in Chinese characters. I was so mad cos feeling cheated by irresponsible person who produce the DVD.

Well, only after i read your recap I then actually understand to whole story. Once again thank you. Anyway I really don’t mind another part 2 of Iljimae. Lets Iljimae end up with Bongsong and Shihoo with Eunchae.

PS: Would like to see more of the romantic side of Lee Joon Ki ( ohh he is soo pretty and he can acts!!).

I was web surfing and found this very interesting comment from Jun Ki:

On the topic of whether or not Iljimae died at the end, Lee Jun Ki said, “According to the script, Iljimae is alive. Iljimae carries a sword that doesn’t kill and while Iljimae was fighting with Sa-chun, his sword was taken away and eventually Sa-chun sliced Iljimae’s back (with Iljimae’s sword)” therefore emphasizing the fact that Iljimae is alive.

The director had me worried there for awhile when i thought that Iljimae died in the end. Haha.. Good thing he didn’t!! Yippie!! Really really really had hoped he didn’t die, cos then it would be a waste for me to have ardently followed the series.. Hehe.. Thanks a lot for for convincing explanation on why Iljimae didn’t die =) Explains a lot.. But one thing though, i don’t get the part where Shi Hoo said he can’t hand in the proof to protect the people his brother wants to protect.. Who are the people whom Iljimae wants to protect? I thought he wanted his dad’s name to be cleared.. Hope my queries can be answered.. =) Thanks a lot!! =)

I think Iljimae wanted the protect everyone who didn’t have someone to go to when they were in trouble: the poor, the vulnerable, etc. It’s more of an abstract idea. Plus his family and friends, of course.

Hello. I don’t think this ending was logical. Normally I like the happy end, but this was very naive. The King didn’t punish anybody. Iljimae is living, and restarting his work. Why? Where was he? And the others? The last 15 minutes was a fairy tale.

My ending: Iljimae died. Ok, the King got lunatic. The people were crying for their hero. His mothers got heartbroken friends. Etc.

Iljimae should have passed away. This is the logical ending. 😦

I love this show too!!!!! Yeah I finished the last (repeated) episode on May 16th too:)

Thank you so much! The re-cap and all the earlier comments has cleared up tonnes of my questions abt the ending, like the 2 pairs of shoes, who are the parents of the little kid at the end, is itjimae alive anot. And the explanation of why he didn’t die is so convicing. By carrying a sword which allows him not to kill, he has saved himself in the end. Yay!!:) I;m so glad he didn’t die, I would be extremely sad otherwise. Will go re-watch epsiode 1 later to make sense of the ending!

But I still dun understand why Shi Ho doesn’t want to give up the bloody letter? Why giving up will mean harm to those Yong strives to protect? Unless they’re trying to keep the peace and keep the villagers and Yong’s friends safe by keeping everything a secret?

  56. Haruka
    Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 8:30 am

Why Shi Hoo wont give up the bloody letter is quite simple.

Eun Chan’s father is the one who originally made the bloody letter, if Shi Hoo gives them the bloody letter, investigation will start and it will come out to be Byun Shik’s doing… with consequences of treason, meaning death.

Why Iljimae wanted to protect them; He loved Eun Chan and he befriended Shi Wan.
Why Shi Hoo also protects it; He also loves Eun Chan and its the family that raised him anyways.

Meaning, if Shi Hoo gives up the letter, all of them will either die or be in prison, just like Geeom’s family was treated and Shi Hoo clearly understands this.

  57. chocol8
    Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 5:31 am

to HARUKA: I think you confused what is the “bloody letter” referring to. It’s the letter written in blood on a piece of cloth Lee Won Ho’s bestfriend left for Kyumi, exposing the King as his father’s murderer.

The letter is something he can hold over the king, killing his own brother, to prevent him from doing any retaliation to anybody in the town.

Hi Sevenses! Thanks a lot for your effort! I watched the drama through online streaming and wasn’t able to see all the action clearly. I REALLY THOUGHT HE WAS DEAD! I didn’t see that it was Iljimae’s sword that the assassin used on him!

I think you shouldn’t worry about the amount of commentary you put on your recap. It’s what makes your recaps actually SO ENJOYABLE!!!

I also have speculations of my own which I would like to share regarding those four years gap.

What if Yong was actually following Bong Soon around w/o her knowledge to protect her as he promised? I just find it too coincidental that they both returned exactly after 4 years?!

THIS WAY, BONG SOON IS NOT SO PITIABLE AFTER ALL?!

So maybe those shoes ARE FOR Yong and Bong Soon, as a welcome back gifts. I’m sure Yong kept Kunghe informed of his “daughter’s” where about. So maybe Bong Soon is finally ready to come back and reconcile with her “father”.

I really don’t think Kunghe would have let Bong Soon travel around on her own and be able stand staying on the island for that long w/o knowing what’s happening with her!? Not with how much I think he loves her?! Not to mention with her disability!

THIS ARE JUST SPECULATIONS MY FRIENDS!

OR ELSE the four year gap is just another window for the writer to start ILJIMAE 2!!! They can make a whole new chapter just by making the story of Iljimae’s exploits during those 4 years. WHICH IS REALLY OK TOO!!! I, for one, would very much like to see more of ILJIMAE!!!

What I can’t still figure out is Ketong’s age, even if you count time in the womb, it would still add up to just 4 years. Since Dani and Swe Dol just got married a few days before the 4 year gap, right?

  59. Haruka
    Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 4:44 pm

Ooohhh thas true! I forgot bout that letter too! Lol my bad, but if it was d second letter, den who did he want to protect?

  60. chocol8
    Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at 3:37 am

Everyone who don’t have the power to protect themselves against the authorities who abuses their power. These are the people Iljimae protects.

Shi Hoo can send that letter to the Qing/Manchu Dynasty(I think this is China) just like that minister threatened to do. The Qing can use the letter to depose the king or make a puppet out of him. We all know how the king is when it comes to protecting his throne.

I don’t know much about history of that part of the world but I guess those were the times where countries are starting to be established so there are lot of territorial wars.

  61. chocol8
    Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at 1:05 pm

just finished watching this drama again and thought to answer a question floating around “what did bong soon do to iljimae’s clothes that he knew that she wasn’t dead?”

It’s not something IN or ON the clothes, but the clothes themselves. They were the clothes Bong Soon was wearing when she pretended to be Iljimae and went off the cliff. I think it was his spare one, but weren’t those suppose to be disposed off after Swel Dol died in them?

NOTE: Sorry to contradict the summary given above, but I think Bong Soon was actually waiting in Iljimae’s hide-out on the same night of the place robbery. Yoong didn’t wear those clothes that night, he was wearing another set, with the new inner sewn by his mom and the armor refitted/repaired by his shoemaker friend. She went to the hide-out and sent her father to help Iljimae in the palace.

Well there are a lot of inconsistencies in this drama, like how did he get his sword back after he rescued Eun Chae? He was disarmed and they didn’t have it with them when they were running and encountered Shin Woo along the way. There’s a lot more holes if you watch carefully, but it’s not so hard not to mind them because the drama is so DAMN ENJOYABLE!!! PEACE!!!

    Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 7:03 am

I wonder why director don’t make a special episode? Now, Lee Jun Ki has already attended army, so it would be impossible to make it now, but it’s fine to wait for another 2 years. I think if make season 2, it would be hard but if a special episode which talk about what did happen during the gap of 4 years would be great. Viewers are also more satisfied and not so much confused about the ending. The ending will be clarified, there is no need for guessing. How others thinks about this idea?

I’m having many dreams about Yongee and Bong Soon, but because it’s not clearly, I always feel like there are something missing. I wished Yongee and Bong Soon have many happy moments together. Bong Soon sacrified too much, but her only happy memory is the night before Yongee go to rescue Eun Chae, when Yongee said that he want to take her with him.

On the night Yongee go for rescuing Eun Chae, his words broke my heart, I’m not touching because what he said, but thought that:” How is our poor Bong Soon? What is she mean in his heart? Where is she if his heart belongs to Eun Chae?”, thinking all of that, I cried like mad.

And when Bong Soon decided to sacrify herself for Yongee, at that moment, Yongee was together with Eun Chae, protecting Eun Chae. Honestly speaking, Eun Chae is quietly annoying me during the serie, I just wished she disappear for Bong Soon’s sake. I skipped all the part that having Eun Chae in it, and keep playing again again parts that Bong Soon and Youngee together. But still, it’s not enough to make me full.

Ah, one more thing, Bong Soon is the most pitiful girl in Iijimae, she always get wounds because of others, and broken heart because of Yongee. She deserves to receive much much more than that, much more love from Yongee. What the hell why Eun Chae did not be crashed for a bit, but receive special love from Yongee, why my poor Bong Soon…? Director, please, when Lee Jun Ki back, make a special episode, please, please, please, please…

Firstly, Yong realized Bong-Sun was a live because she returned the clothes (remember, she impersonated him before her and Kunghe fell of a cliff).

I don’t think he died. I noticed, that NONE of the main characters were in the ending. He could have been stealing from a different banquet, because the King was still on his throne. I didn’t even see any of the minor ones. If anything, you’d think Si-Wan would be there since he worked in the palace. However, the guy that was told to kill Kunghe at the end too Chun’s place.

Dan-yi and Swe-dol could’ve had a child. Yes, the tooth isn’t hereditary, but children lose teeth at that age. He could’ve just used it as something to relate to with his father.

I think Yong was living with Kunghe, unless Bong-sun’s feet are actually that big D:

He also seemed like he knew his way around a little in the ice chamber… maybe that was just me. If Yong had 4 years to recover, he could be back on his feet in no time. If not, he’s Iljimae. He’d make it work 😀

I love Han-Hyo-Joo. She’s one of my favorite actors… but man, Eun-Chae was making me furious. Yes, she tried to be independent… but she lost my respect by acting/always being the Damsel in Distress. At least Bong-Sun has REAL guts. She would ever do anything like what Bong-Sun did.

I’m glad Chun died. I leaped with joy. You go Shi-Hoo!!!

I’m usually negative when it comes to the end of any type of movie/drama (trust me. not kidding). I kept trying to think he died… I told myself a thousand times. Then, I re-watched the beginning of the series and the end repeatedly. I honestly believe in the bottom of my heart that he didn’t die. His eyes are even still partially open as it changes to a white screen (not that that means anything).

I don’t think he met with Eun-Chae or Bong-Sun. I think he wanted to keep as many people away from him as possible for their sakes. He relied on Kunghe because he was Yong’s master. That, and Kunghe is a man that can take care of himself. Nobody would touch him.

Swe-dol died so cruelly… I haven’t been that mad over a death in a while. That was so sad. Yeon’s death was definitely the most startling.

I didn’t have a ‘couple’ so to speak. Eun-Chae and Yong’s relationship was too… fake/sweet/mysterious. Bong-sun and Yongs was too friend-like. Honestly, I was just hoping everyone made it out alive. Alas, it did not happen.

At first, the intro really bored me (not the VERY beginning, thats what attracted my because of his good looks XD)… but I am very glad I watched this. It kind of had a moral: Nobody is as they seem, or never judge a book by it’s cover. It really has my mind thinking…

Thanks for the recaps though. Even though mine were pretty spot on (dramafever), I needed some clarification here and there. Those subs even had “Where did he go again?” as Kunghe’s last sentence. I think if anything, that put my heart at ease.

Also, that stare at the end, and the music, I cried. I dunno… I watched again, still cried. Sigh.

I just finished watching this series on Dramafever. These recaps are a real resource! Thanks so much, 7ses! If it weren’t for this thread I would be mourning the death of Yong right now. Those other supposed clues, the shoes, the unseen tightrope guy – that wouldn’t have convinced me. Even the return to episode 1 – I would have dismissed it as just a wishful fantasy. But that sword business!! It went over my head completely when I watched the episode, but now that it’s pointed out in this lovely forum I am completely convinced.

To me i think that the shoes are both for iljimae and Bong soon bcus the second shoe is a girl’s shoe and if wat that kid say is true then iljimae is also with them.Secondly when Bong soon met iljimae’s mothers she didnt ask abt him bcus she knows where he was.
Iljimae choosed bong soon when he refused to show his face to eun,he only went to save her bcus he dont want anybody to die 4 him again.
I love dis film so much and i want bong soon to be loved and happy.

Well iljimae’s duty is to help the citizens if his country. And he was supposed to have no life b/c then those he loves would die. So in the end wen we see that he is alive, it shows that he won’t talk to anybody he knows/knew, to be an “iljimae” and to prevent more from dying. ( notice how everyone thought he was dead for the past four years)

I started out not liking this film because I was so tired of that first love theme. First love is not always true love. For me Bong Soon was Yongee’s true love. Eun Chae was better off with Shi Hoo. She treated Yongee like crap. She only seemed to be interested in lljimae. It is just ridiculous that as a child, as an adult and also as lljimae, she meets him in a tree and she is still asking to see his face. Bong Soon finds the lost jewel and as soon as she finds out that Yongee is the owner, she knows immediately that he is the boy who years ago promised to protect her and not let go of her hand. Remember, Geomee/Yongee lost his memory. Eun Chae while looking for Shi Hoo, held Yongee’s hand and called him the Korean word for brother. This must have triggered his memory of meeting a young girl and her brother and the promise he made. Unfortunately, because his memory was faulty, he mistook Eun Chae for that girl. This is why he was always talking about “fate” and saying things like both he and Eun Chae is “fated to be a couple.” See how shocked he was when Bong Soon reveal the truth! As confusing as the ending was, I think that Yongee and Bong Soon became a couple during those four years. Remember what Yongee said about Seo Dol. He wasn’t his father but he always sacrificed and loved him anyway. It was the same with Bong Soon. She was not the woman in his heart at that time but she loved and sacrificed for him anyway. Bong Soon loved her “father”, that is why it was hard to take revenge. You could see how heartbroken she was as she fought with him on the cliff. Bong Soon had already forgiven her “father”. How could she not? She relied on him to help save the man that she loved. I do not believe she is roaming at all. She and Yongee promised to protect each other. She is dressed like that probably to fool lljimae’s enemies; also her outfit resembles the one that Yong Jae her “father” wears and the rumors say lljimae was disfigured. Anyway, the reaction between Danee and Geomee’s /Yongee mother is completely different. Danee is in shock but Geomee’s mom reaction is different. It is like the same reaction Danee told Ja Dol/Shi Hoo to give her if they should meet on the street; to not acknowledge that they know each other. I agree though, the ending could have been better. Both Yongee and Bong Soon had suffered so much, it would have been heartwarming to see them happy together. “The Return of lljimae” was blah so, I hope there is plan for another lljimae with the original characters in the works so I can see how Bong Soon’s and Yongee’s love blossoms.
