An Ugly Death to Human Rights

30 06 2008

Well, it’s time for me to put on my political commentator hat again. And, surprisingly, this post isn’t about Zimbabwe. (I figure there are enough people commenting on that as is. The issue doesn’t need me to muddy the waters.)

A few weeks ago, a 15 year old girl was found in a river near Wengxian, Gui Zhou. She had been raped several times, and then killed. The three thugs suspected of the crime were apprehended by police and then released the day of their arrest. The police department announced a conclusion of ‘probable suicide’ and closed her case.

Concerned and angered by the cavalier treatment by police, her uncle, a popular teacher, went to talk with the policemen in charge of the case. He was brutally beaten and has since disappeared.

Furious with this particular instance of criminal collusion and (I suspect) many other previous oppressions, the populace took to the streets and burned down the police department.

Now there’s armed police from the surrounding counties patrolling the streets. No one can get in, and no one can come out. I’m not sure what’s happening in there. The Chinese media have censored all mentions of the incident from being mentioned, and internet searches have been restricted.

Here’s where the facts end, and my commentary begins.

This is not, as I would like to believe, an isolated incident. The Chinese government, at the local level, has always reigned supreme, doing what it likes to the people. They are no better than thugs, and in many instances, are capable of much worse. I can write until my fingers fall off, about the mines in my home province that resorts to human slavery and kidnapping to harvest coal. I could talk until my throat gives in about the violence and brutality that plague the poor areas of rural China.

You think the Tibetans have it bad?

Welcome to China.

Despite the central government’s efforts to build a kinder, more efficient government, the nature of the infrastructure and sheer bureaucracy make it possible for the local/county level officials to do what they want, with nary a word from the central government (which is usually kept in the dark). It’s the perfect storm of circumstances that allow most officials to throw away human rights.

The girl I mentioned was a good student who consistently got good marks in school. Her classmate wanted to copy from her during an exam, but was rebuffed. The classmate is the niece of the county governor. She hired a few thugs to beat the girl up, rape her, and dump her corpse into a nearby river. Her uncle did nothing to condemn her, and instead instructed local police to shield her and her hirelings.

When this kind of thing happens, it is not because the man in question was evil. It is the sign of a decaying society. I argue with my incurably optimistic Chinese friends all the time about the path China is walking. It is capable of greatness, and that greatness is balanced by danger of equal magnitude. Let’s hope this incident shakes the central government into realizing that things cannot just go on as before.

Ultimately, I’m afraid that central no longer has control over the local government, and that is why things like this are occurring more frequently.

There’s a reason I hate politics, you know. Dig up, and you find some surprisingly nasty things.

Yours,

Incensed fandom fracas in Iljimae

30 06 2008

How… interesting. I was bored (and my internet provider informed me that if I dl-ed any more stuff I would get a surcharge fee the likes of which would sink me, I decided to lay off on the vid watching for a while – am one episode away from finishing MLS!) and decided to check out the d-addict forum for Iljimae. I admit, I should have answered all my comments like a good girl, but I’m sure you guys would forgive me the lapse.

Anyway. The Chinese fans are off having their Bong Soon vs Eun Chae war. (Last I saw, people had descended to using ad hominems already. Ha.) Not a few enduring friendships between 亲亲 were broken up, more’s the pity. But the mudslinging has calmed, and both sides have acknowledged the relative merits of each girl. (There’s been a few battles about the possible ending of the show too, but that’s kind of common. Remember Harry Potter?)

Meanwhile, the English fandom was off having its hissy fit because English subs for episodes 5 and 6 of Iljimae were not released. They got rude, offensive, and downright demanding.

Now, I generally don’t wade into this type of crap, and I’m not terribly opinionated, but really? The subbers owe you? Why on earth would they owe you subs? They’re doing it for free, out of their own spare time, and definitely not on a contract. Sure, realtime broadcast is on episode 12 and the subs are only released to 4, but you know what? Subbing is hard work. The fact that these people are willing to take the time to do this means you shut up and wait for them to release it at their convenience. If you’re so torn up about the subs, wait for all of it to be released, and then watch it.

Honestly. It’s not the first time it’s happened, and it’s not the last. Get over yourself.

This takes ‘drama’ to a whole different level. :D

That’s it for the fandom lurker report. For now.

P.S. Due to all that ridiculousness, subs have been released elsewhere. Go over to Soompi Forums or KST’s own site for Iljimae English subs.

Character Guide for Iljimae

29 06 2008

So Lyn dearest asked for a clarification on the maze that is the relationship between people in Iljimae – I remember drawing charts for a friend about Hong Gil Dong, and uh, being deprived of a scanner, I shall have to explain in words. (It helps me keep things clear too.)

Okay, first off, we’ll start with the person the show’s named after:

Iljimae

  • He’s more commonly known as Yong, son of Dani and Swe Dol. To those in the know, he’s actually the adopted son of Dani and Swe Dol. His real name is Lee Kyum and his father was Lord Lee Won Ho. He also had an older sister named Yeon. He lost his memory at a young age due to the trauma of watching his father die and then having to save himself by injuring his mother – Dani comes upon him and takes him home. When he grows up, he has no memory of who he really is, and is constantly picked on by a pack of young nobles he goes to school with. One day, in desperation to save Swe Dol’s hand from being chopped off, he accepts to fight. While being beaten into the ground, he remembers his past. As he doesn’t know who killed his father but does recall an etching on the man’s sword, he becomes Iljimae to search the houses of nobles who are part of an association called Friends of Heaven. He learns his thieving skills from Swe Dol and has mastered impressive martial arts skills from Kunghe monk. On the romance side of things, Bong Soon is helplessly in love with him, while Eun Chae only loves Iljimae, thinking Yong to be an uncouth thug and mourning Kyum as her dead love. (Interestingly, she’s the only character who’s met all three personifications – Bong Soon came too late for Kyum and has yet to come face to face with Iljimae.) He shows a partiality for Eun Chae but sees Bong Soon like a friend (and treats her like an annoyance). In daily life, he acts as a useless hooligan and frustrates the life out of his adoptive parents.

The Main Protagonists (aka, people who help Yong)

Swe Dol:

  • A kindhearted and somewhat failed thief who raises Shi Hoo (until he was 9) and Yong like his own sons. He was hired by Lee Won Ho’s mother to get rid of Dani (see below), who was by then pregnant with Lee Won Ho’s child. LWH himself pays Swe Dol to take Dani away and keep her and her child safe. He does so. Later, Byun Shik forces him to plant evidence of treason in LWH’s yard, and in a strange twist of fate, Shi Hoo does so, to save Swe Dol. He’s felt guilty towards Yong ever since, and considers nothing too much for the repayment of his deeds against Yong.

Prime Minister and servants

  • Close friend of Lee Won Ho. He never accepted the fact that LWH was conspiring against the king and discovered that his friend was actually framed. This leads to the annihilation of himself as well as his family at the hands of the people who plotted LWH’s murder.

Iljimae Episode 12, recap

27 06 2008

I’m so giddy, ooh, and not from the heat or lack of food. It’s so hoooooooooooooooot. I wouldn’t mind either, but the humidity hangs all over like particularly unwanted attention.

Episode 12

Kyum’s tattoo, in passing, looks like an amalgamation of the words ‘heaven’ and ‘friend’ in Chinese.

Bong Soon nurses Yong through the night. He wakes up and hears from her (unintentionally) that a noble he’s targeted is going off to Japan on diplomatic/spy related issues.

Byun Shik is admonishing his underlings for failing to capture Iljimae. Eun Chae, at home, is worried about Iljimae’s safety. While getting stuff for Byun Shik, Shi Hoo notices that Eun Chae’s stuff are being displaced, and cottons on to the fact that Iljimae is working from the list of Friends of Heaven.

So now guards are stationed at potential households. Except that Shi Wan walks off with a gisaeng.

(Woah, Iljimae can search places when there’s someone sleeping there?? Nerves of steel, dude.)

Lols, Shi Wan gets tied up and hung on top of a well, like he did to Iljimae. His screams bring a bunch of soldiers, who give chase. Iljimae gets sandwiched, after which he escapes, and Shi Hoo manages to be the only one who can keep up with him. Even after getting slashed in the leg by Shi Hoo, he still gets away.

Iljimae: 2; Shi Hoo: 1 (give concession for two injuries)

God, I want to kill Jang Geun Suk’s stylist

27 06 2008

Snark post. You stand/sit forewarned. Then again, considering what we’re dealing with, you might also want blinders.

This is what I mean.

Like, what? This is fug on so many different levels, I don’t even know where to start. He was at some random event for bags. Whatever. Maybe working on 281397310 projects has dulled his fashion sense, but what happened to not wearing all white before Labour Day? Or after? (Admittedly he’s Korean so I won’t expect him to know or care…) But, you know, picking an outfit that won’t let his nipples show? NOT THAT HARD. It requires a little looking in the mirror. That’s it.

My main beef is with how he’s trying to seem older and tougher, and he just looks like he got overenthusiastic with the gel and fell face-first into the engine of his car, resulting in light black smudges he refused to clean up. Right now he’s 21, and his asset is the fact that he’s fresh-faced and cute. Use what you have, dude.

AND THOSE HAIRY LEGS. For someone who’s built a career around looking cute and fetching, he’s doing a good job of walking away from that role. By having a midlife crisis 20 years in advance.

I’ll leave the shoe commentary to … other people.

At least when he had his brief fling with radioactivity, he looked okay. Cute, fresh-faced, and a little bit dorky. That’s how we love our Jang Geun Suk. But god. Here, he just. [insert wild flailing]

I should have a category dedicated to ‘What the hell are you wearing??”

Iljimae csubs should be out in 4 hours.

Iljimae Episode 11, recap

26 06 2008

It’s heeeeeere, spent forever waiting for it!! Anyone else have really slow downloading speeds from China?

Episode 11

They open with a pretty complete collage of everything that’s happened so far in the series. I don’t really need a refresher.

So, his date with Eun Chae? Turned out to be escorting her back to the village of the poor. At home, she is revealed to be absent from the carriage. Shi Hoo is super worried, but Eun Chae is having fun at the village. The girl actually has the courage to go home in the dark, alone. Through a bloody forest. *headdesk*

Aww. Iljimae walks her back home. (Not that he can fight or anything, but I guess it’s good not to be alone.) They do the whole ‘I look at you, you look at me’ thing. They evade the patrol, led by a very anxious Shi Hoo, and go on their merry way together.

Eun Chae does most of the talking. It’s cute, how her confidence is rattled by him.

Shi Hoo rushes back, right on Eun Chae’s steps, but she’s very happy and dreamy. Her brother knows something about her escape doesn’t square, but he’s fine with her being fine, so major disaster is avoided for the moment being.

Legend Episode 15, recap

26 06 2008

Episode 15

The former High Priestess’s second-in-command, which is to say Kiha’s new second has doubts about Kiha’s orders and gives voice to them discreetly. Kiha is pissed. (Wow, is it just me, or are the evil vibes getting stronger?)

I can totally see why Kiha wanted this job. Look at the nice robes she’s wearing!

She calls Yon over and tells him to get rid of the families who support Damduk. She herself will not allow Damduk to enter the palace when he returns, nor will she crown him.

Creepy Hwacheon dude and Lord Yon take the news that Damduk is planning to attack Gwamni will lots of glee. They think he’ll get killed.

However, in Gwamni, the attack is somewhat succeeding… and I don’t know, things look dire enough (they’re still trying to conquer a block of solid rock, sheesh.) The general of Gwamni is hit by an arrow, and the overlord person rides out, giving off steam (and putting out a fire) as he comes out the city gates.

Gourmet Episode 3, recap

25 06 2008

Most of my info’s taken off Dramawiki and Soompi, so if you have any corrections, fire away!

Episode 3

(Far away, there is an unidentified sense of YUM from my direction as they open the episode with food.)

Mr. Kim, of the North Korean delegation, does not like Sung Chan’s soup. (Well, it wouldn’t be exciting if the show just had people falling down left and right over his cooking, would it?) He’s okay with the cook though, and forgives him for making a weird soup.

Meanwhile, darling Nam Sang Mi, playing food journalist Jin Soo, whips out her harridan skills as she is carted bodily out of the restaurant. There is a lot of yelling and intimidation. Poor guards.

Back to Sung Chan and Joo Hee, who are feeling just a tad awkward over the delegate’s dislike of the food. Mr. Kim makes like he’s going to throw up, to the concern of all, but waves it away as routine. (Um, when you routinely retch, I’d say, get a doctor.)

Flower’s Message (화신), Park Hyo Shin

24 06 2008

Hey guys! I’ve got Iljimae’s soundtrack on repeat right now, and yeah. rene was kind enough to give me the link to Track 2 lyrics, which is one of the nicest songs on there. Anyway, after some industrious digging, I also found the Chinese translations, and from those, have done a rough translation of the English too. (irugnotmis, now is the time to show off your Chinese! Correct me, please.)
