Songs from ROCH

30 04 2008

About to fall asleep over the keyboard, I think, is a good indication that one should go to bed/plan less activities in the day.

But who cares about sleep when you have the internet?

I have been revisiting my favourite dramas, and I fell in love with the Return of Condor Heroes OST (2006) all over again.

The opening and closing are especially good.

天下无双/Without Match: Sung by one of the top female vocalists in China, this song is at once haunting and full of longing. [zShare]

江湖笑/Laughter of the Pugilist: (augh, crappy translation, but closest I can muster at present) Just fun to listen to - though I have my doubts about the middle. [zShare]

And here’s a random MV of the series, in case you’re interested:

Return of the Condor Heroes is very much a love story, which is a slight change from Jin Yong’s other works, and I’ll get into more detail when I can actually prop my eyelids open.

The Butterfly Lovers/Liang Zhu/梁祝

28 04 2008

I remember loving this song when I first heard it - it’s one of the few Chinese folk songs that was written down in the Western style.

Download: [zShare]

Here’s an excerpt:

It’s the story of two star-crossed lovers, the Chinese Romeo and Juliet, if you will, though I much prefer our version.

Basically, a girl named Zhu Yingtai disguises herself as a boy to go to school. While there, she befriends Liang Shanbo, and the two become close. When their period of study draws to a close, Zhu invites him to her home under the pretext of marrying her ’sister’ (actually her) to him. He agrees to visit her, but it is two years later before he actually goes.

Once in her hometown, Liang discovers the truth, and asks her parents for her hand in marriage, but they have already promised Zhu to a richer, more influencial man in the area named Ma Wencai.

Heartbroken, Liang takes up a magisterial post in a nearby region. He soon dies thereafter.

When Zhu is escorted to the Ma’s residence, she is prevented from moving past a certain point of her voyage by natural phenomena. She stops to ask the locals, only to learn that Liang’s tomb is in this area.

Zhu visits the tomb and cries. When her tears fall on the funerary mound, it splits open, and she jumps in.

The legend says that the people there saw two butterflies emerging from the tomb and flying away.

(Hence the name.)

The violin concerto is written in Western key but with Chinese chords, thereby giving the instrumentalist extreme complications. Plus it’s hard to play in certain parts because of the speed required. It’s not to everyone’s taste, and quite a few people have told me that they feel it sounds ‘off’ because of the Chinese tonalities used, but it is one of the few traditional pieces I love, so I thought I’d share.

不留 (Bu Liu), by Faye Wong

27 04 2008

New favourite song, even if it is old(ish). Plus points for an awesome MV.

Download the song: [zShare]

MV below:

Lyrics in Chinese plus translations (by me! :D )

不留/Leave Nothing

I gave the scenery to you, the days to him
I gave my smile to you, forgiveness to him
I gave XX to you, my body to him
I gave my tears to you, I gave the photos to him
The calendar to him, the colours to you
The scenery to him, distance to you, but my breaths to him

I gave the fireworks to you, the holidays to him
I gave the movie tickets to you, the seat to him
I gave candlelight to you, the dinner to him
I gave the songs to you, the microphone to him
My sound to you, the setting to him, and the script to him
The end’s for him, I gave you the crystal
shoes, but 12 o’clock was for him

我把心给了你 身体给了他 情愿甚么也不留下
再也没有甚么牵挂 如果我还有哀伤 让风吹散它
如果我还有快乐 如果我还有哀伤 让风吹散它
如果我还有快乐 也许吧

I gave you my heart, gave him my body, didn’t want to leave anything for me
Without any anchors, if I have any sadness, let the wind blow it away
If I still have joy, if I still have sadness, let the wind blow it away
If I still have joy, maybe

As per requested

27 04 2008

Iurgnotmis wanted a book review or an anecdote. As I would probably rip Blackburn’s Being Good: A Short Introduction to Ethics to shreds (if I were the sort to rip books, I mean) if I were forced to read it again to review it, I’ll settle for the anecdote, thanks.

So, according to my parents, I was a precocious thing (don’t all parents say that about their children? Practically a litmus test for how much you love your child - a snot-covered toddler will be crooned at to the tunes of “Look at the precious darling, creating Rorschach blots all on his own!”.) and I cared, very much, about how others saw me, even at the somewhat unnoticeable age of 4. (Seriously. I have lower than average height for an Asian, and when you factor age into that… I was a short, wispy little thing.)

Anyway, I was short and little and unimmunized, which meant that I had to undergo that ritualized child-torture routine: shots.

Imagine a crying child, abjectly in fear of people dressed in white and long tube things they carry because they stick it into your arm (or your butt if you’re unlucky, I suppose) and clutching desperately to his/her mother/father/parental figure. Then multiply that by like, 20. Absolute bedlam in the hospital, I say.

There I was, in the queue of wailing children, and I decide to be heroic. (This is all apocryphal - I have no recollection whatsoever of doing what follows - but I do remember the wailing children and hospital walls. Some sort of collective unconscious, seared into the brains of scared children everywhere, I don’t doubt.)

Looking up at my father, I pipe, “Don’t worry. Daddy, I’ll be brave. I won’t cry!”

My father, good man that he is, keeps his doubts to himself.

Once on the crinkling hospital cot, I look at the nurse, with her brisk pre-shot preparations, and I repeat my mantra, “Daddy, I won’t cry.”

Then she approaches. My voice begins to quaver, “Daddy, I won’t … cry?”

“I won’t! I won’t cry… I - I …” And the proverbial floodgates opened.

Ah, for the fallacies of youth.

Now, having divulged an embarrassing childhood story, open thread time, people, while I go hide in my hole and blush.

Prospective Dramas

25 04 2008

So, while I was off nursing my wounds from Hong Gil Dong and various real life stuff, I’d realized that it’s time to dive back into the spirit of full-scale drama obsession once more!

Hence this post.

Stuff that look interesting:

Legend of the Condor Heroes (2007 version, as opposed to the 1795613878 other versions)

Trailer below:

Guo Jin - Hu Ge
Yang Kang - Yuan Hong
Huang Rong - Ariel Lin
Mu Nianci - Lu Sisi

Ariel Lin strikes me as a particularly impish Huang Rong, which will make a welcome change to Zhou Xun’s rather more OOC performance. Don’t get me wrong - I like Zhou Xun, but the job description calls for a scintillatingly lively and cheeky girl, which she wasn’t.

Not too stuck on the other characters, especially as they’re probably going to play up Ouyang dude’s role. And try to redeem Yang Kang. Geurkness. I liked them evil and one dimensional, plskthx. The last one was awesome for side roles (and main roles if you disregard the source material on the girl’s side…).

Filming and release has been delayed due to Hu Ge’s back injury - a bad thing for martial arts epics, we know.

I hope they won’t mess the original novel too much… I have had it up to here with creatively ‘fusion’ historical dramas.

(Just noticed - there’s one actor who’s been in both versions, though in different roles. See if you can spot him! Will do a Legend 03 version post ASAP.)

Il Ji Mae

Yet another Robin Hood-esque do-gooder story. This time starring Lee Junki. I keep telling myself I’m interested because I want to cure my HGD melancholy, but the real reason is that I’m watching it just for the eyecandy.

It’s supposed to start broadcasting sometime in May, but there’s been delays and pushbacks, so keep your ears open.

Hana Yori Dango the movie

Trailer/teaser below:

Okaaaaay. The English sub got moved… so here’s the rough translation.

Domyouji: Marry me, Tsukushi!

“Presenting the drama that was such a hit, they made it into a movie!” [Pan of main characters, tralalala, look at the pretty lights.]

Voiceover: We ran all over the world for love.

Domyouji: What the heck is this?!

Tsukushi: Wha… that guy!

It’s not much, but dudes, it’s Hanadan. What else do I need to say? Comes out June 28.

Love,

Fallacies

24 04 2008

The amount of utter random crap I’ve seen lately on forum boards, discussion threads or facebook topics (should have seen this one coming, methinks) on subjects ranging from fanfiction to Tibet to the best poutines in town has been very interesting and lolcat worthy. Yes, I know, if I bothered to venture out of my own little bubble of safety and lala-ness I would see that most netizens think spelling and punctuation apply to other people, are astoundingly agrammatical, rude, into capslock and bad at logic.

However… this will hopefully help you distinguish between what actually is a valid argument or not. Taken from a handout in law class, this lists a common number of illogical lines of debate.

If people persist in being idiots, then feel free to claim ‘troll’ and move on. There are better things to do with your life.

Fallacies that occur in writing:

Bandwagon appeals: if everyone is doing it, it must be right. Or, since everyone is doing it, what’s the harm in it?

Begging the question: the claim itself is actually used as proof to support… the claim.

Oversimplification: common or garden variety statement that doesn’t do justice to the complexity of an issue.

Either this or that: nothing is ever that simple, not even George Bush’s intelligence.

I’m gone for four days…

23 04 2008

… and the world explodes.

Currently on ye olde radar:

- The Clinton-Obama-never-ending-contest-of-doom. At this point, dudes. It’s redundant to say anything. Mostly what can be said has already been spewed out there. My adding some verbal diarrhea to this subject doesn’t do anything…

- Montreal people rioting over their home team’s win. Get this. Their hockey team wins, after a lot of tension as to whether they’ll beat the Boston Bruins, and what do they do? They torch cars, beat up police, and scare lots of people on Ste. Catherine’s. Good going, drunken hockey fans. I knew I could count on you for a good, sensible time.

- And J.K. Rowling decides that the HP Lexicon is debasing, pilfered, and badly put-together. Plus, she’s suing Steve Vander Ark for copyright infringement, among other things. I think most of this was Warner’s doing - because which super-popular fantasy series hasn’t sprung more than a few encyclopedic compilations by fans? Admittedly Tolkien is dead and Gaiman is flattered, but how much richer than disgustingly rich do you want to be? Yes, it’s her baby. But she’s used it herself to keep the facts straight during writing - which she has admitted to. I have zero use for the Lexicon, having long stepped out of that particular fandom, but if she honestly thinks fans are out to rip Harry Potter off and make money, she’s going to lose a lot of fans. (Plus, SVA has lots of loyal fanboys, as evidenced by the showing at Prophecy. Just a warning.)

And you may have noticed that the layout has changed… I got tired of the comment thread running waaaaaaaaaaay down where the sidebar ends, so I did a bit of switching around. Am self-professedly bad at this whole CSS/html thing, so it’s pretty much the original layout provided.

Exams. Ha. Do not study the night before. That is all I’m saying.

Semi-hiatus

20 04 2008

Due to some foreseen and unforeseen circumstances, I will not be posting next week, and infrequently for the next few weeks. It’s not the end of the world, but I’m a student and need to do some studently things. Unfortunately this clashes with the blog… I need to focus on some other stuff at the moment.

Luckily dramaland is hitting a somewhat dry season until after my finals. Yey, sort of. It’s never good to have a dry run. But it does save trouble catching up all the time. Meanwhile, I refer you to my ‘Cool Stuff’ links section.

See you around!

Don’t be too CNN

19 04 2008

I AM LOLLING. SO MUCH LOL.

Don’t be too CNN

One day I saw a photo on the internet
Describing Lhasa’s violent incident in Tibet
CNN swore that the truth was all there
But I gradually found, that this was a lie
No matter how things change, and oceans may recede to reveal land
The incident of the Zhou Tiger* and this photo are equally despicable
Don’t think that lies become truth if they are repeated a thousand times
The night gave me black eyes, but I will use them to find light
Why spend so much time trying to make false things true? Don’t be too CNN
How can you turn Jay Chou into Li Yuchun**?
Why spend so much time trying to make false things true? Never be like CNN
I would prefer if you were stupid and naive…

* The incident of the Zhou Tiger refers to one hunter’s miraculous ‘discovery’ of a tiger in a forest. The local officials took this at face value and used it to get a large grant from the central government to designate that area a protected park - but in fact the photo of the miracle tiger was actually a life-size calendar of a reclining tiger taken in the woods. The local government colluded with the ‘hunter’ (actually a local farmer) to get money. Very infamous incident of 2007, at least in China.

** Li Yuchun is a super girl idol, also of 2007, I think.

I wonder how this would address the one-sided media report on all sides of the debate? Interesting and funny, but stupid people exist all over the world, unfortunately.

Anyway, this tidbit was for you, before I go off into the deep end of scholastic hell. Hopefully I’ll re-emerge.

Thanks to Pris to pointing this article out, which led me to the song. Haven’t lolled like this in a while.

And on that note, about the issues the article addresses, vigilantism is always always bad. It’s right up there with terrorism. If you have something to say, keep it civil. Don’t toss rocks at houses. The house (or the human) can’t fight back if you toss rocks…

Wanted, movie

18 04 2008

Yeah yeah. I know. It has absolutely nothing in common with the graphic novel of the same title, except for the protagonist, who is named Wesley Gibson.

And I know they butchered the plot and meaning of the original Wanted, which tends to annoy me in books I dearly love, but since James McAvoy is starring in it, I’ll give it a shot.

Undoubtedly it will turn into one of those underdog-to-hero things. Oh well. There are worse things to be.

Clichés inherent in the system:

- Boring, broody, yet strangely hot if only he would dress well (and by well we mean black leather) hero? Check.
- Gorgeous and mysterious woman? With guns? And who making out with the hero? Check.
- Secret monastic brotherhood? Check.
- Fate/destiny/any variant thereof on the free will issue? Check.
- Gunfighting? Check.
- Underdog with surprising powers? Check.
- Assassins? Check.
- Mystic mumbo-jumbo? Check.
- Did we mention the guns?

But James McAvoy! The same one we fell in love with in Atonement and wondered at in Penelope (meaning, why was he there, even if he is rakishly cute and yummy?).

Yes, I am a sucker for the pretty faces, how could you tell?
