West Side

No music post in a while, yesh?

Therefore I will talk about JJ Lin’s new (relatively) album called West Side. He tries to depart from his usual rap style by adding in some more experimental songs and mellow-ish pop, but his voice and lyrics are as attention-grabbing as ever.

Some are concept songs, playing with compositions, sound, rhythm (that’s got to be the most difficult word in English) and while I applaud his efforts, they need more work in terms of creativity if he’s really going for artsy music.

Two of my favourite songs for sampling:

杀手 -The Killer: At one point he sings in French! But not very groundbreaking phrasing: C’est la vie, etc. [Zshare] [MU]

发现爱 - Discovering Love: a sweet duet ballad with an artist named 金莎 (Jin Sha), who also goes by the name of kym. [Zshare][MU]

They’re also the most diametrically opposed songs on the album, unless you count K-O, which is just rather mindless macho rap.

As a side note, am drowning my sorrows by reading Terry Pratchett books. It’s working wonderfully.
