West Side

30 03 2008

No music post in a while, yesh?

Therefore I will talk about JJ Lin’s new (relatively) album called West Side. He tries to depart from his usual rap style by adding in some more experimental songs and mellow-ish pop, but his voice and lyrics are as attention-grabbing as ever.

Some are concept songs, playing with compositions, sound, rhythm (that’s got to be the most difficult word in English) and while I applaud his efforts, they need more work in terms of creativity if he’s really going for artsy music.

Two of my favourite songs for sampling:

杀手 -The Killer: At one point he sings in French! But not very groundbreaking phrasing: C’est la vie, etc. [Zshare] [MU]

发现爱 - Discovering Love: a sweet duet ballad with an artist named 金莎 (Jin Sha), who also goes by the name of kym. [Zshare][MU]

They’re also the most diametrically opposed songs on the album, unless you count K-O, which is just rather mindless macho rap.

As a side note, am drowning my sorrows by reading Terry Pratchett books. It’s working wonderfully.

Still not over it

29 03 2008

I’ve been told that I have been exceedingly mopey these past few days. (Gee, people, could you guess why?)

Remember at the end of 23’s recap, I said, “What will episode 24 bring? I have this vague feeling CH will relent in the end. Either that or everyone dies, and that can’t be possible, so I go for the happy end.”

AHAHAHA. DEAD OF IRONY.

Nonetheless, I have successfully diagnosed myself with the five stages of grief, in regards to Gil Dong and Enok (not to mention the most awesome group of people ever, the HBD!)

They are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Pris was there during my denial phase, ‘Oh no they didn’t!’

You were all there for my giant, capslock-filled anger stage, I think.

I seem to have skipped the bargaining stage altogether in favour for a longer depression period. Not even Korean food with two awesome friends did that much. So… walking towards acceptance as I listen to the soundtrack over and over again.

After that, expect the fanfic. I will not just lie down and let my heart be stomped over, dammit.

(As I type, I’m listening to the fire arrows song and tearing up. Still not over it, I guess.)

Hugs to all of you who are feeling the same.

Love,

Sevenses

P.S. The fire arrows song is called ‘Lar Meg a Kjenne’ - it’s Norwegian, and therefore out of my realm of translatability. But I’m sure if you google the song you’ll find lyrics. Here’s the download link - it’s MU.

Hong Gil Dong Episode 24, recap

28 03 2008

Final episode, folks. And if you were around before yesterday, you’d have seen my preliminary reaction to the ending. I’m slightly calmer, but recapping this is going to be tough.

Must-haves for this episode: a box of Kleenex, some alcohol (chocolate if you’re underage) and a friend/stuffed animal around so you can have hugs when it’s over.

I would have gotten this up faster, but I’m sorry, I couldn’t keep from crying on the keyboard.

Before I start, I’d like to thank: flyingcrispi, jess, marai, soruyo, iurgnotmis, janesc, pris… thanks for poking over and letting me know that my writing sucks. XP

Also, special thanks to the people over at soompi: hjkomo, shirley, canyayasis for the on-spot spoiling, jinkzzmec and crybabytt for the caps of episodes and bts, axerine, pho50, saturn and K4Ice for tidbits to tide us over the HGDWS, oink and laiyiwen for all those beautiful MVs, Kim Yunmi for being the resident expert on everything, annchong and puela for the never-ending uploads! And all your discussions, goofing off etc made this show such a pleasure to watch. You soompiers are an awesome bunch.

Episode 24

It begins with Gil Dong on the bridge linking a group of Hwal Bin Dang buildings, telling his people: The beginning of our world was not the new king, but this! Protect that beginning!

Chang Hui is in court: The dream of a world without monarchy is threatening our kingdom. We must begin to attack Hwal Bin Dang now!

Hwal Bin Dang members are making fortifications, prepping and arming its people. We see a parallel act: the king’s men are doing the same. His troops begin to move out.

Enok is still with Noh and Ryu.

Noh: His majesty has already attacked Hwal Bin Dang’s headquarters, if you go you will die.
Ryu: You are Ryu Enok, do not go to that person’s side!
YN: Then I will go to gongja and dissuade him from attacking, no, I’ll go and tell Gil Dong to run away. I have to stop them from fighting. But why are they fighting? Didn’t they work together?
Noh: Their worlds are clashing.
Ryu: You befriended him as Heo Enok, but you are Ryu Enok now. Ryu Enok’s place is at his majesty’s side!
YN: Heo Enok, Ryu Enok, I don’t know anymore. I am only worried that Gil Dong will die.

Enok runs out, to the distress of Ryu. Noh cries for her as ‘child’, which is strangely poignant.

Yong Jin and Chisu lead the siege troops to the mountain.

We have a heavily symbolic moment when Gil Dong exchanges his stick for an old sword. Gil Dong is moving slowly, as if pressed down by something (I would say fate, but the ominous is crushing me.)

Thoughts on Episode 24

27 03 2008

Imagine that, at the end of the Harry Potter canon, Ron takes it upon himself to rid the world of everyone who’s had contact with Death Eaters (I believe that’s called vigilantism.) Imagine that Hermione is so blinded by her love for him that she is willing to go with him, even when the Ministry sends in their top Auror, Harry Potter, who begs them to stop, or at least compromise. Imagine that Ron threatens to kill Harry too, if he doesn’t join him in his quest for justice. Imagine that Harry (secretly in love with Hermione) has to kill them, tears streaming down his face.

Or!

Imagine that Black Beauty decided to end the tyranny of humans by kicking out and wounding as many men as possible. Imagine that, as a consequence, he was sent to a messy demise at a gluemaker’s factory.

Doesn’t make much sense, does it?

Well, that’s how I feel after Hong Gil Dong’s ending. Honestly.

I felt like I’d been kicked in the stomach. I wanted my time back. It was, as intended, an unforgettable shock - I will always remember HGD as the could-have-been drama.

I admit, things had felt a bit odd after 20 (and I think you’ll agree with me that pacing problems started around then too). It seemed that the Hong sisters dropped the ‘fusion’ out of fusion sageuk and went for the traditions in a big way.

I don’t mind that. (I don’t mind quite a lot, as long as it’s done properly - that’s why I hated the movie version of The Dark is Rising. Killed the book.)

What I do mind is an ending that doesn’t give what was promised at the start, that it started off cheerful and goofy and eventually descended into drawn-out melodrama and angst. It’s not about the beginning of episode 1. The moment Yeon died, I realized that the beginning of episode 1 was an idealization of HBD and what they did. That’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about the series’ atmosphere and mood at 1-8, as compared to 19-24. They’re radically different, and I feel like it was a bait-and-switch tactic (more commonly used by rather unscrupulous stores to get customers to go there).

Some specific issues with the ending in particular:

- GD’s continual stubbornness: Hello. How many times did CH ask him to compromise? Didn’t GD himself recognize, as he said to CH in 23, that change cannot arrive in one day? So why all that melodramatic posturing and refusal to back down? He wasn’t asked to compromise his beliefs or vision for the future. He was asked to adapt it to the long term.

- All that dying: I ask you, did HBD’s total annihilation accomplish anything? Did YN and GD’s demise, besides depriving CH of a much needed moral compass, and even more needed friends, serve the purpose GD was fighting for? I get that ‘the legend lived on’. Sure. GD, however, failed to protect his people by voluntarily choosing to die (come on, he knew he was going to be killed in the end). Who will protect the people when he’s gone? CH’s hands are pretty much tied down by the nobility. Gom is 12, going on 13, and HM is an old man. Dreams aren’t going to prevent another Choi from taking advantage of poor people.

- Letting the HBD walk into their deaths: Just. What. Was. For the sake of his unbending knees, he let a band of the cleverest, loyalest, funniest followers die. I can’t match the smart, savvy, compassionate and down-to-earth GD from the beginning with this idealistic idiot. It was a stupid change in character. Flaws are flaws, but letting people die is another issue altogether.

- GD dies, but he lives on in the heart of the people. CH, on the other hand, lives, but he dies in the hearts of the people. Nice, Hong sisters. Speaking as a CH fan, why did you create one of the most thoughtful, likeable second leads in kdrama history, have him learn happiness and compassion, then force him into situations where he’s always the bad guy? If I hadn’t already died from the end, this would have killed me. CH’s character, all of them got the short end of the stick, honestly. But my poor gongja :( .

- This whole thing about CH vs. GD sucked. Yes, their worlds are incompatible, yes, we want a message of hope about GD will continue to look after the world even after he’s gone. But that makes this situation even worse - I hoped for a resolution, a way for the two worlds to compromise. I feel completely cheated. It would have been better, imo, if they’ve been able to work it out, because that matches the action with hope. Hope without action, as I’ve said earlier to flyingcrispi, is delusion.

Don’t get me wrong. I’ve watched tons of Chinese historical/wuxia dramas where mostly everyone dies and the king is a tyrant - but the plots and atmospheres mostly squared with each other from beginning to end. I also love HGD to pieces, even after all this. But the end!

It made as much sense as… well. Let’s not go there. Lots of nonsensical things in this world.

What I mourn the most of all is my feel-good, stress-relieving drama that pulled me through 2 months of university applications.

My heart hurts so much.

Love,

Sevenses

P.S. Csubs are unusually late, as I suspect the subbers are as shocked as we are. Will recap when subs are out. In the meantime, check out iurgnotmis’s short and concise synopsis (she has a genius for keeping things short, a genius that eludes me, continually).

Doremi tidbits

26 03 2008

To cheer myself up a bit, I strolled around at the JGS thread… and I found this ‘making of’ video of Doremifasolatido (took me four times to type that correctly, obviously still traumatized by that Horrible Thing of Doom.)

Here is the link. It’s quite cute, and the boy sings!

Waiting for the Time, a song from Doremifasolatido. More singing. *swoons*

Full of Sunshine, another song. *is dead of swooning*

Go thank the people who posted this! Go!

Love,

Sevenses

This is the interview that made my inner GDxCH squeal. Watch for around 1:56!! (Subbed in English, thank goodness.)

Will be back with more, after the specials air.

Episode 24 preview

24 03 2008

Go give your thanks to crybabytt!

Preview here. Preview the second, here. (They’re the same, but one’s on youtube, and the other one’s in Chinese.)

I’ll be back with textual and scene interpretation later. (So much info, and not enough understandability.)

Text summary:

Battle breaks, GD shouts: Let’s end this!

YN is seen running around between the two - she gives messages to CH from GD. CH doesn’t want her to a) go to GD b) put herself in danger c) be killed as part of the rebellion. (OR all three, I can’t tell.)

There is fighting, though I only see flashes of SG among the mess.

CH is in a war tent à la Mongolian - possible siege situation. YN persuading him not to do something. She’s arguing with both GD and CH, at different times.

GD is lightly injured, she tends to him in his room at the mountain. They hug, and it looks like night out there.

Right now there are two main theories running amok on the Chinese forums (creating no small amount of distress, I might add):

1. Enok will die - HM says this in 12 (in the event she goes back to GD), and 23 has been peppered with references to death in her conversations with both boys. Even I’ve noticed.

2. GD travels to the future, where his ideas are somewhat realized. Really not sure on this one.

[EDIT]: Jess, soruyo, iurgnotmis, JaneSc: I really wish YN doesn’t die either. In fact, I want her to make both guys (but especially GD) realize how stupid and testosterone-filled they’re being. I also hope the writers don’t pull that YN-promises-to-stay-with-CH-to-keep-GD-safe crap, first because it demeans their struggles, and second because it would be plain stupid. (Plus, how would they resolve that satisfactorily in one episode??)

I think the first episode is still to come, due to certain hairstyle hints :) . It almost feels like they’re prepping us for an unhappy ending, so it may be that they’re trying to trick us.

And since CH doesn’t have any heirs yet, I assume he lives through this.

Wednesday really can’t come fast enough.

Love,

Sevenses

P.S. Since I’ve gotten several instances of people looking for Hong Gil Dong episode #25 - this show ends at 24, which is to say, March 26. There is a special, consisting of interviews, fun stuff and NGs, but the plot, the story, the thing that’s been making me scream with frustration (at its lack sometimes) for the past few weeks - ends on 24. This public service announcement is now over. Thank you.

Hong Gil Dong Episode 23, recap

23 03 2008

Omg, only one episode left! At the same time, though, I am incredibly frustrated. It really looks like an impasse.

Episode 23

It begins on the same dark note as the last episode.

Chang Hui is all alone in his darkened throne hall, talking to himself. (Insanely bad week for all our favourite people. If 24 continues like this I may throw up some blood.)

CH: It was all lies. Is this where the lies end? Even if everything was false, I must not give up.

Chang Hui’s hand tightens on the golden silk covering of the throne.

Kang Hui is in his room, talking into the air as well, and he’s wishing for his little brother to go insane like himself. (If he knows he’s insane, then wouldn’t that mean he’s not insane? Or does that just mean he has periods of lucidity…? Or does he just think he’s insane in order to avoid thinking about things properly? Okay. Too much thinking.)

Staring into the distance, Chang Hui comes to a decision about something. He calls for an attendant to come. (In passing, even the candles in the palace have golden dragons embossed on them. Flashy.)

Chisu appears at a run. Chang Hui orders him to get everything ready for the coronation (which basically means getting all the ancient documents ready and dinosaurs ministers out of bed). Chisu is like… but it’s midnight. He obeys anyway.

Yong Jin, apparition expert, tells Noh that the coronation is taking place, without the public. Lady Noh is worried at this new turn in events.

Hong Gil Dong Episode 22, recap

21 03 2008

I am this close to throwing up my hands in despair. THIS CLOSE.

But anyway, you’ll see what I mean.

Episode 22

We begin where we left off last episode (they’re getting longer, totally). The king is enjoying himself at his own banquet, as everyone eats and watch the gisaeng dance.

Enok is denied entry to the palace, sees Gil Dong walk by, tries to get his attention. The guards knock her around, discovering that she is a girl, which means intruder. As a last ditch effort, she shouts ‘I love you’ to Gil Dong as a signal. (Me: What happened to her super martial arts skills… or does she think it’s not necessary to use them right now?)

Gil Dong hears and turns around. He recognizes her voice and wonders what she’s doing here. He tries to follow, but learns that no one is allowed to leave the palace, on his majesty’s orders.

As Enok is dragged to some mysterious spot in the palace, she sees the queen escaping with her staff. (So KH covered all his bases.) The king is also about to leave and gets a big attention-getting distraction out.

After seeing a group of guards pass, Enok finally shows off her martial arts skills and gets away.

Gil Dong meets with Suk Geun, and both wonder why Enok is here. Gil Dong knows that if she’s here it means something went awry. Gil Dong goes off to meet her, Suk Geun oversees the implementation of original plan - explosives etc.
